Randy's Story

Life Our 2007 Holiday letter: Ho-Ho-Ho-liday Greetings from the Baileys! Our last holiday letter ended in a cliff hanger: would our marriage survive the new “pick one vacation state at random each year” rule? Would the rules change? What state would we pick??? Well, we are still united in matrimonial bliss—16 years last June. We celebrated with a stay up on the north shore of Lake Superior doing a little biking, a little nature walking and a little golfing, which can look a lot like a ‘nature walk’ for Ann and her slice. The picking of the state was done: NEBRASKA. Yup, we’re going to Nebraska. No, we haven’t gone yet. You know how some sayings change meaning with tone and inflection? Well, there’s a new all purpose saying in the Bailey household: “Well, we could be in Nebraska”. Last spring, Ann’s Dad moved to Roseville, MN, to a memory care unit. His house in Manitowoc is sold and he seems happy in the moment, though misses his independence. We’re happy that he’s safe and close by. In March, Ann had a conference in Dallas and we spent a fun weekend sightseeing, including the Ft. Worth stockyards. In May, we met up with a bunch of college friends in Milwaukee to see Brewers/Twins games and had a great time. One sad event for Randy is that he hasn’t flown since last spring. His flight school/rental place went out of business, as have many flight schools, and he hasn’t yet found a new place dumb enough to rent him an aircraft. He IS still rockin’ in the free world, as his band still practices every now and then. Speaking of music - we heard many great concerts over the summer, including one at the Big Top in Bayfield. One such evening, listening to jazz with friends, Ann was finally talked into amending the ‘pick a state a year’ rules: We w...Expand for more
ill now pick one state on our anniversary (Nebraska, remember?) and one state on our half anniversary—so think of us on 12/29 and hope for something other than another “N” state! Fall has seen a couple of changes to our normal routines. Randy decided that working less that full time would improve our work-life balance and is now on a .8 schedule. His original thought was that he’d just teach the A.P. Statistics classes, but he’s built that into such a popular class that there were too many sections for just one teacher. So, he’s teaching 3 Stats and 1 Honors Pre-Calc; also assisting the person who is teaching the other 2 Stats sections for the first time. It hasn’t worked out to be less time at school but he doesn’t have as much work bleed into our evenings. The new schedule didn’t require him to reduce his load on the Eastview Chain Gang, as the Lightning football team made it to the state semifinals. Ann has switched groups at Target. She’s now Program Manager for the technical teams supporting Business Intelligence applications. In a nutshell, this means she ensures that the projects being worked on meet the overall business objectives of the program. Nope, can’t explain it any better than that. We took off on a last-minute trip to Toronto in October. We toured city sights, went to a local musical production and saw the Toronto Marlies, a minor-league hockey team. Our seats were right behind one of the nets, and we spent the game having a great conversation with the goal judge. No amount of pleading would allow Ann to push the goal light button, but Marlies’ mascot “Duke the Dog” crashed into the boards right in front of us. We wish a happy, peaceful holiday season for all friends and family. --Randy & Ann Bailey randy.bailey at district196.org
